From Chaos to Comfort: How I Tackled the Rental Maze Across Borders

Ever wondered if my Airbnb nightmare strategies actually worked? Here’s how I turned chaos into comfort across three unpredictable stays!

In my last article, “My (Literally) Earthshaking Airbnb Nightmare And 7 Tips For Beating This Dumpster Fire!” I dove deep into the turbulent waters of Airbnb.

After dealing with earth-shaking construction noise and lackluster customer service, I devised a strategy to better navigate this rental minefield.

Now, I’m putting that strategy to the test across Greece and North Macedonia, sharing my experiences thus far, to help you dodge the pitfalls and find your perfect stay.

The Ioannina Oasis: Small Space, Big Comfort

After my longish bus ride from Saranda, Albania, I arrived in Ioannina, Greece. Lugging my baggage from the bus station, I finally reached my self-check-in studio, which turned out to be a hidden gem.

This little sanctuary, booked through booking.com, was the epitome of comfort and convenience.

The owner, a property management company with an impressive array of listings, had clearly semi-mastered the art of hospitality.

Walking in, I was greeted by modern amenities that made my stay incredibly enjoyable.

The rain shower was a welcome luxury after a day of travel, and the kitchenette, though small, was surprisingly well-equipped.

It had everything from a coffee maker to breakfast biscuits, jam, and a couple of welcoming cookies.

The bed was a dream, offering a restful sleep, and the location was ideal, close to the city center.

The fridge, stocked with both sparkling and still water, was the cherry on top.

Reflecting on my stay, I wished I had booked two nights instead of one.

Despite being the priciest of my accommodations (though not by much), it was worth every extra penny.

Thessaloniki Trials: When Minimalism Misses the Mark

Next up was Thessaloniki, Greece, where I experienced a two-night stay through Airbnb.

The property management company here boasted nearly 200 listings on Airbnb, also spreading their net to booking.com, for the same price.

But when checking for longer term discounts, which you normally get automatically when booking with Airbnb for anything over a week, there were surprisingly no discounts for longer stays on Booking.com.

So it seems that even sites like Booking.com haven’t quite caught up to Airbnb in that aspect.

The studio apartment in Thessaloniki was clean and modern but leaned heavily into minimalism.

For example, it had a new washing machine, but no detergent or even a clothes rack to dry your clothes. What’s up with that?

The kitchen was bare-bones, lacking essentials like bottled water, which, considering it was July in Greece, was a significant oversight to say the least!

While the space was livable for two days, I couldn’t imagine enduring it for a week, let alone longer.

The bare minimum approach, especially for the price, left much to be desired.

Skopje: The Airbnb Granny Apartment

My final leg of this journey so far, has led me to Skopje, North Macedonia, where I’ve been staying in what I affectionately call a “Granny Apartment”.

This Airbnb, managed by an independent host, was a stark contrast to the property management companies I had previously encountered.

The apartment had all five-star reviews, albeit with the last one being five months old, which made me slightly apprehensive.

The decor was a bit old-fashioned, a telltale sign of an inherited property turned into a rental.

However, it was fully stocked with every imaginable appliance, utensil and cookware, creating a truly authentic living experience.

The location was perfect for me, away from the hustle and bustle yet close enough to supermarkets and the city center.

One notable aspect of staying in North Macedonia is the somewhat archaic but sporadically enforced rule requiring all visitors to register with the police within 48 hours of arrival.

Since I’m usually overly cautious and try to always plan for the worst case scenario, the last thing I wanted was a 500 Euro fine upon leaving the country given by a border guard having a bad day.

My host, despite the fact that he’s had foreign guests before, was surprisingly unfamiliar with this process, but quickly adapted and ensured my registration was in order, providing me with the necessary document and peace of mind.

His responsiveness and willingness to help made my stay even more enjoyable.

I felt so comfortable that I extended my stay from the original one week booking to another month and might even prolong it further.

Lessons Learned Thus Far: Navigating the World of Short-Term Rentals

Reflecting on my journey, I realized the importance of thorough research and clear communication when booking accommodations.

Here are a few tips that have served me well:

1. Research and Compare: Always check multiple platforms (e.g., Airbnb, Booking.com, etc.) for the best price and amenities, you may find the same listings on multiple platforms.

2. Short-Term First: Book a few days or a week initially to ensure the place meets your expectations before committing to a longer stay.

3. Communicate Needs: Don’t hesitate to ask the host about:

• How to get to their place from the airport, train or bus stations.
• Which Taxi Apps are best and the approximate cost you should anticipate to get there by taxi, so you don’t get ripped off.
• Public transport options.
• Any other country specific requirements, like registration in countries with such regulations, etc.

Don’t be shy. Remember, the only stupid question is the one that’s never asked.

4. Expect the Unexpected: Be prepared for your accommodations not to have everything you expect, and find ways to adapt to each situation.

In the end, each stay, whether perfect or flawed, adds to your travel experiences, offering lessons and memories that not only teaches you what to look out for next time, but enriches your travels as well.

So, when you’re booking a stay, remember to balance price, convenience, comfort, and leave in a little “touch of adventure” wiggle room.
