I Wasn’t Ready for Some of These Places to Change My Life… And Neither Are You

Tired of the same old bucket lists? Paris? Overrated. Barcelona? Out Water Gunned (literally).. and Bali? Overrun.

I call these 12 below, tourist flyover destinations. They’re hidden gems so off the radar even Google Maps might blink twice.

Some I’ve explored, others were underrated secrets shared by fellow travelers and expats, but all are on my bucket list to visit or revisit.

Finding these hidden gems feels like unlocking the next level of travel, and what I discovered left me wanting for more.

Forget the over-hyped tourist traps, because these 12 underrated locales will change how you see the world, and maybe even change your life, one mind-blowing destination at a time.

1. Vidin, Bulgaria: The Fortress That Time Forgot

Imagine standing in a medieval castle, gazing out at the serene Danube River as if you’ve stepped into a Renaissance painting.

Ahh, that’s Vidin for you. Baba Vida Fortress isn’t just a historic relic, it’s a portal to a time when knights roamed and Instagram didn’t exist.

I climbed its stone towers, half-expecting a damsel in distress to call for help.

Spoiler alert: She didn’t. In fact, no one did since I had the place practically to myself!

Afterward, I strolled Vidin’s riverside promenade and savored local wines at a cozy bar, evoking memories of Burgundy’s Route des Grands Crus.

Coming up next: a Greek city with a castle so magical, you’ll wonder why Disney hasn’t bought it yet.

2. Ioannina, Greece: The Greek City That’s Way Cooler Than Santorini

Ioannina doesn’t care about your white-washed Instagram aesthetic.

This city boasts Ottoman-era charm, a centuries-old castle, and a moonlit lake straight out of a romance novel.

I took a boat ride to the island in the middle of Lake Pamvotida and felt like I was trespassing on Zeus’s personal retreat.

The centuries-old monasteries and peaceful vibe had me convinced I’d stumbled into a Greek myth.

But wait, what’s next? A Hungarian city where every building looks like it came out of a fairytale.

3. Győr, Hungary: Baroque Bliss Meets Modern Cool

If Budapest and Vienna had an artsy love child it would be Győr. Instantly captivating and effortlessly cool.

I wandered through its Baroque old town, each square prettier than the last, until I found myself at the Basilica of Győr, a church so grand it made me rethink all my life choices.

The best part? The riverside vibes here feel like Europe’s best-kept secret, minus the tourist stampede.

Next stop: a German city where three rivers meet, and the magic triples.

4. Passau, Germany: Where Three Rivers and Baroque Dreams Collide

Picture three rivers: the Danube, Inn, and Ilz, all meeting, while a Baroque dreamscape sparkles behind you. That’s Passau!

Wandering its cobblestone streets, I stumbled upon St. Stephen’s Cathedral, home to one of the world’s largest organs, where it feels like angels have a house band.

Between Bavarian beer, schnitzel, and riverside views so stunning I almost walked straight into the water, this place is pure gold.

Think that’s amazing? Wait till you hear about the North Macedonian city that blends the old, the new, and the totally bizarre.

5. Skopje, North Macedonia: The City That Refused to Pick a Style

Skopje is a bold blend of history, chaos, and charm that just works.

The iconic Stone Bridge, the flavor-packed Old Bazaar, and Macedonia Square’s towering statues of Alexander the Great feel straight out of an epic blockbuster.

I ended it all with a hike to the Millennium Cross, where the views were so stunning, I nearly refused to leave.

In fact, I ended up staying in Skopje for another 2 months! You may too.

Coming up: an Italian lake you’ve never heard of but will definitely want to dive into.

6. Lake Iseo, Italy: The Quiet Star of the Italian Lakes

Forget Lake Como. Forget Lake Garda. Lake Iseo is the introverted cousin who steals the show once you actually pay attention.

The highlight? Monte Isola, Europe’s largest lake island, where cars are banned, life moves slowly, and the views feel like a reward for every tough day you’ve ever had.

I spent an entire afternoon hiking, then collapsed at a lakeside café where the wine and fresh-caught fish were worth every step.

It’s tranquil, it’s stunning, and best of all, it feels like a secret.

But what if I told you there’s a Mexican city where the streets are alive with music, color, and history? Let’s go.

7. Mérida, Mexico: The City That Dances to Its Own Beat

Mérida doesn’t just exist, it “vibrates”. From the colorful colonial buildings to the bustling markets where every corner offers another tantalizing smell, this city feels like a party that never ends.

One night, I followed the sound of drums and stumbled into a street festival so joyous it could’ve powered the whole Yucatán Peninsula.

And then there’s the food: tamales, cochinita pibil, and tacos that will haunt your dreams.

Mérida is your gateway to Mayan ruins like Uxmal (where I once obnoxiously ran up the pyramid before they banned it) and cenotes that double as nature’s secret swimming pools.

Next up: an Albanian mountain village so pristine you’ll think you’ve wandered into a fantasy novel.

8. Theth, Albania: Where Nature Shows Off

Tucked into the Albanian Alps, Theth feels like the universe’s apology for all the bad days you’ve ever had.

Think dramatic peaks, waterfalls that could star in a shampoo commercial, and trails that lead to places so beautiful they might be fake.

One morning, I followed a winding path to the Blue Eye, a spring so vibrant it looked Photoshopped.

The best part? The village itself, with its stone houses and welcoming locals, feels like it’s been frozen in time.

But what if we left Europe and ventured to the far east, to a Japanese city where ramen, beer, and snow create the perfect trio? Stay tuned.

9. Sapporo, Japan: Snow, Beer, and Ramen Dreams (Bucket List)

Winter? Epic ice sculptures at the Snow Festival.
Summer? Beer gardens and perfect vibes.

And the ramen? So legendary, it’s practically a religion.

My friends can’t stop raving about the pristine streets, amazing people, and effortlessly cool charm of Sapporo.

Oh, and did I mention the beer? World famous and rightfully so. Nothing goes better at a rock-n-roll sushi bar than Sapporo!

Now, forget Venice and let’s head over to Belgium for a city that combines history, art, and canals like it’s showing off.

10. Ghent, Belgium: A Real-Life Fairy Tale (Bucket List)

Forget over-touristy Bruges, Ghent is where magic lives!

Think glistening canals, medieval castles straight out of “Game of Thrones,” and artisan chocolate shops at every turn.

And the “Ghent Altarpiece”? It’s basically the Taylor Swift of Renaissance art.

Travelers gush about Ghent’s artsy energy and cozy cafes, it’s the fairy tale city you didn’t know you needed.

Speaking of underrated gems, wait till you hear about Argentina’s Córdoba where colonial charm and mountain adventures collide.

11. Córdoba, Argentina: Charm, Mountains, and Magic (Bucket List)

Córdoba ticks all the boxes, colonial churches, edgy art, and a food scene that’s a nonstop fiesta.

Beyond the city, the Sierras de Córdoba offer horseback trails with jaw-dropping views, while Mar Chiquita lake is a birdwatcher’s paradise.

It’s not just a destination, it’s “the” destination you’ll wish you’d discovered sooner.

Next, we’re diving into one of Europe’s oldest cities, where history and modern vibes mingle like old friends.

12. Plovdiv, Bulgaria: Europe’s Oldest Cool Kid, (Bucket List)

I’d like to thank Jillian Amatt – Artistic Voyages for this one!

Plovdiv is ancient, like, over 6,000 years of history ancient, but it wears its age with swagger.

From the Roman-era Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis (still hosting shows, no big deal) to the artsy Kapana District, this city seems like it knows how to impress.

The Old Town’s cobblestone streets and vibrant 19th-century houses look like a history lesson you’d actually want to pay attention to.

And with festivals out the wazoo, and a buzzing creative scene, Plovdiv sounds like proof that being old doesn’t mean you can’t be cool.
